Nana Jans

a new start up who put their heart and sole into their brand, scooping up a marketing award along the way.

A client with a passion for the nation’s favourite dish, embarking on an ambitious task of converting an existing fish and chip shop into a franchisable chippy with a difference.

With a business plan and a solid grasp on what makes them different, they researched and ensured that they had the best batter mix and sourced the best ingredients. This ambition to bring a variety of great tasting foods to market was the driving force for us to provide one final key ingredient for success … the branding.

brand identity – marketing – event collateral – point-of-sale

discovering an identity that fits the personality.

After several meetings with the client, it became very clear that the personality would lead the line. Having the co-founder, and a food fanatic at the helm, It was natural for the brand name, to be her family namesake ‘Nana Jan’.

Using this personality we created a brand to attract attention, conscious that we were conveying strong warm emotions making use of heart symbolism, primary reds and yellows for the main colours all building upon the core message we developed ‘made with love’. All ready to be translated across a vast range of marketing materials, including uniform and advertising.

bringing a personality to the forefront in print, fun, fresh and responsive to the modern market.

Further reinforcing the ethos behind the Nana Jan, an idea from the initial branding exercise was revisited, and adjusted to fit with the chosen style. To bring a smile to consumer faces and feel better connected to the brand we created an emoji styled on ‘Nana Jan’ which was great for expressing personality into marketing materials.

Since launch, we have gone on to produce a variety of marketing materials for the client. From menu boards, through to promotional toys, a racecar livery as well as a heavily branded delivery vehicle to go with their brand new app based service. The culmination of this mammoth 12 month effort, Nana Jan’s scooped up The National Chip Award 2019 for Marketing Innovation*.

Anna Bengtsson of award sponsors Pukka Pies, said: “The quality of marketing and promotional activity undertaken by fish and chip businesses is of prime importance to the growth and success of such enterprises and it’s great to recognise a business that has demonstrated great creativity and innovation, setting a high standard for their industry peers to aspire to.” “Through our sponsorship of this particular award category, we want to encourage all fish and chip businesses to strive for excellence with their marketing activity and to understand the benefits that marketing can have.”
